The new version will be a completely new re-write, and will incorporate many of the new features in iOS.  Additionally, it will have some minor feature enhancements that have been requested by the user base.  I anticipate this new version being available before the end of the year.

And the best part is that it will still be free!

Introduction

The Board Feet Easy Calculator is a simple, and easy to use, application for calculating board feet.  It you don't work with wood then this application is of no use to you.  If you do have the need to calculate board feet, this easy to use calculator may be just what you're looking for.  Simply enter the length, width and thickness and the calculator will tell you the board feet for the given dimensions.  Optionally, you can specify the number of pieces, a waste percentage and the cost per board foot and the calculator will produce the total board feet, the board feet including waste, and the total cost.

Although there are other free board feed calculators - and I tried them all - they either did not have all the options I needed, and/or had user interface quirks, so I created my own.  I use this calculator often and find it handy, so I want to share it with any other woodworkers that need an easy to use board feet calculator.

Usage

To use, simply enter the length (if feet and/or inches) and the width in inches.  Then tap Calculate.  The thickness defaults to 4/4 and the pieces default to 1.  This makes it very simple to calculate the perform the most common calculation.

Optionally, a waste percentage can be entered (no cutting layout is perfect, not to mention bad sections of board).  And finally, a cost per board foot value can be entered.  If values are entered in all the fields, the calculator displays the net board feet (without waste factor added) the total board feet (including the waste percentage) and the total cost.

Tapping reset will clear all the fields, and reset the thickness to 4/4 and the pieces to 1.

Project Support (Version 2.0)

The new 2.0 version has support for grouping multiple calculations in a project (for example, 4 pieces of 96”x6”x4/4 and 2 pieces of 48”x4”x8/4, etc. which together would form a bill of materials).  A project sums all the calculated board feet pieces to provide a total board feet and a total cost.

Create a project, and simply provide it a name.  Then tap the project, and tap the + button to calculate the board feet of a given board.  Tap save and the calculation appears in the list.  To edit it, simply tap on it.  To delete it, swipe right and tap delete, or to delete multiple items, tap Edit and tap the minus icon on each item to delete.
